According to a recent study by the Workers Compensation Research Institute, Pennsylvania was the second highest of 18 states for cost of claims with over seven days lost time. Only Louisiana was higher. Average cost was $54,362 compared to median of $41,888.

Contributing to the higher cost:

  • High litigation expenses.
  • Higher average defense attorney payments.
  • Longer duration temporary disability.
  • Larger lump sum payments.

From 2012 through 2018 total costs increased an average of 3% per year. Since 2015 medical costs have been 20% higher than the median (since 2107 this has dropped to 4% higher than the median).
